Barbara Baker (nee Taksen)

April 9, 1943 – September 7, 2025

Barbara Baker, a trailblazing businesswoman, devoted wife, mother, sister and grandmother, passionate supporter of the arts, and pillar of the Buffalo community, passed away peacefully at the age of 82 on September 7th.

Born in Rochester, New York, Barbara went on to attend the University at Buffalo, initially pursuing a career in education. However, in the early 1980s, she discovered her true calling in real estate—a field in which she would go on to leave an indelible mark. Over the next four decades, Barbara became one of the most respected and successful realtors in Western New York, consistently ranking at the top of her profession and receiving numerous accolades. A true pioneer for women in real estate, she broke barriers and shattered records, all while mentoring countless others along the way. Remarkably, her career remained in full force until her passing.

Barbara was the beloved wife of the late Douglas Baker, founder and President of Mercy Flight Helicopter, whose legacy of public service she proudly honored throughout her life. Together, they raised three children: Karen Baker Levin (married to Todd Levin), Todd Baker (deceased), and Stephanie Katzman (married to Josh Katzman). Barbara was the cherished grandmother of six: Taylor, Connor, Julia, Hadley, Drew, and Myles, who brought immeasurable joy and pride to her life. She is also survived by her brother, Robert (Susan) Taksen, and her sister, Melinda Taksen.

Beyond her professional achievements, Barbara was deeply devoted to Buffalo’s cultural and civic landscape. A passionate patron of the arts, she was involved with Studio Arena Theatre and the AKG (formerly the Albright-Knox Art Gallery). Her leadership and dedication were further reflected in her service on several boards, including Planned Parenthood, and most recently, the Buffalo Zoo Board.

Barbara’s energy, elegance, and unwavering commitment to her community and family will be remembered by all who knew her. She lived her life with purpose and passion, never slowing down, always striving to make Buffalo a better place.
