Dr. Elias Kaufman
January 25, 1939 – April 4, 2025
Elias Jacob Kaufman, DMD was born January 25th, 1939 in Brooklyn, NY. His parents, Barney and Jean Kaufman, were both public school teachers. He and his younger sister Laura grew up in a home where letters, art, and music were highly valued.
Elias graduated from Erasmus Hall High School and then went on to earn his undergraduate degree at Cornell University and his Dental Degree at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. In addition to his academic studies, he developed a lifelong passion for classic 5-string banjos, folk music, and the history of banjo music in the United States.
He came to Buffalo in 1966 as a professor of dentistry at the University at Buffalo. He also continued his love of music and hosted a radio show on WBFO called Banjo and Ragtime. It was at WBFO that he was introduced to his future wife Madeleine. They were married in 1971. Elias and Madeleine were the editors of the American Banjo Fraternity magazine The 5- Stringer for almost half a century.
Elias taught at the University of Buffalo for 45 years until his retirement, including a decade as the chair of the Human Subjects Review Board. He directed the New York State Sealant Program for Underserved Children and was a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
Elias is survived by his sister Laura, his wife Madeleine, his children Rachel Kaufman (Larry Gosse), Benjamin Kaufman, and grandchildren Clara and Micah.
A Private Graveside Service will be held by the family. Memorials may be made to Buffalo Jewish Federation, Hospice Foundation of WNY or a charity of one’s choice. Share condolences at mesnekoff.com
