In Loving Memory of Catherine Engelhardt Ellis

April 12, 1958 – January 19, 2024

Catherine, affectionately known as Cathy, embraced the simple joys of life—delicious food, deep sleep, beautiful scenery, and good music. A talented singer in her youth, she participated in choirs and competitions into her college years. Her love for music endured into adulthood, a cherished part of her personality.

A highly intelligent woman driven by a passion for teaching, Catherine earned her master's degree in education from SUNY Buffalo while balancing the responsibilities of motherhood and full-time work. While professionally serving as the Director of Student Medical Insurance for the University of Buffalo, her innate talent and dedication to education and service continued to shine through. Following the birth of her son Benjamin, she trained as a doula to help guide other women through childbirth. In support of her community and husband, Jim, she served as a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Kenmore Volunteer Fire Department. With her daughter, Sarah, she regularly participated in public outreach events through the Girl Scouts of America.

Her heart overflowed with warmth, evident in her irresistible urge to pet a happy dog, enjoy the scent of a flower, or squish a stuffed animal. Cathy possessed a remarkable ability to remember the distinctive histories and emotions associated with any object she held and enveloped herself in the memories of beloved people and places.

Cathy's love extended fiercely to her family and she delighted in sharing tales of her childhood, parents, and brothers, Rick & Ken. She radiated with immense pride whenever she spoke of her children, Sarah and Benjamin. She loved cozy evenings at home with her husband, Jim, and their beloved dogs, staying up late to laugh until she cried and giving the absolute best hugs.

Catherine's legacy is one of love, compassion, and unwavering dedication to family. May her memory be a source of inspiration to us all.
